“Svetlana from Russia broke her hip due to osteoporosis at age 63. She could no longer continue working and needed the help of family and friends to recuperate.”

At Main Line Rheumatology & Osteoporosis, we endeavor to treat osteoporosis as aggressively as possible to prevent fractures from brittle bones. The risk of developing another fragility fracture after the first one occurs, is 5 times higher in the next year. Recognition of risk factors is critical to success.

So true!!

Many people have problems with osteoporosis as well as elevated lipids, both requiring medications. Unfortunately, they can get in each other's way as statins can impact osteoporosis. It’s important not to adjust your medications without discussing it with your doctor, first!

With the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur this week, the question of health issues with potential consequences related to fasting, comes up in discussion. Fasting is observed in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam religions throughout the year, and the issue of health and medications should be considered during any fast.

As doctors, our advice to patients is not to skip taking medications while fasting, unless taking them on an as-needed basis. Simply take medication with a few sips of water. For patients who require anti-inflammatory medications, it is important to take medication with food to protect the stomach from developing an ulcer. A few bites of a cracker can protect your stomach’s well-being. Doctors respect the religious significance of fasting, but our concern is always for the welfare and health of our patients. In our experience, most rabbis and other clergy will agree.

As we age, it’s natural to lose bone mass. Sometimes you can help turn a diagnosis of osteopenia around, before it becomes osteoporosis. The doctors at Main Line Rheumatology recommend increasing your dietary calcium (dairy products, kale) and vitamin D intake, and increase weight-bearing exercises and strength training. #MainLineRheumatologyandOsteoporosis #MainLineRheumatology #bonehealth #osteopenia #osteoporosis #vitaminD #weightbearingexercises #exercise ...
